Snow Music Ecoacoustic Workshop
With Alaskan composer and ecoacoustician, Matthew Burtner
Participants will learn how and why snow makes sound. They will use special microphones to amplify the small sounds of snow in order to hear music inside the snow. Then they will learn to perform music for snow using a unique music notation developed by Dr. Burtner. Finally participants will use their new skills to perform an original composition, “Syntax of Snow” for amplified snow and electronics. The workshop will take place partially outdoors in the Church of Love gardens so warm clothes are necessary. Participants should also wear warm winter gloves or thin gloves and an extra pair of mittens. No previous experience with music or snow is necessary. Participants do not need to read music or play an instrument to fully benefit from this workshop. Participants should also be able to attend the 8pm concert, which is free for those in the Snow Music workshop.
