Church of Love has temporarily closed for major renovations and awesome upgrades!

THANK YOU to the Church of Love (COL) supporters and patrons! The past three years have given Cook Inlet Housing great insight into the potential for a sustainable Cultural and Community hub right here in the center of the Spenard neighborhood. In that short time, the Church of Love has hosted a variety of shows, meetings, markets, camps, parties, galleries, plays, concerts, artist studios, artists in residencies and more.

We are excited for the next steps in this great journey, which involve a major renovation to bring this beloved 1950’s building up to code, to provide accessibility so that the entire community will have better access to this incredible asset and to provide better egress and much needed safety upgrades.

This process requires time, patience and money. The CIHA team has been working diligently for the past year with architect Chris Cole at 61North (who has his practice right next door to the COL in Spenard) to come up with a design that reflects the building’s history and creates space for its future. The team has also worked with partners to meet the budget needs of the renovation project. Thanks to ArtPlace America, US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), The Kresge Foundation, The Atwood Foundation, The Rasmuson Foundation and CIHA we now have funding to begin the work.

What now?

1. We will add construction updates on this website and Facebook throughout the renovation.

2. CIHA will post an “Invitation to Bid” for local contractors to submit and compete for the job.

3. Final designs will be submitted to the Municipality of Anchorage for permitting.

4. A contractor will be awarded the renovation job and work will begin.

In the meantime, we welcome your inquiries about future events. We don’t have a renovation schedule yet, that will happen after step 4 (above), but when have it, we will be actively programming for 2020!

Thank you again, to the dreamers, doers, artists, champions, patrons, supporters, neighbors and friends of Church of Love for your early and continued belief in the repurposing of an old building in Spenard, into a flourishing Cultural and Community hub. We look forward to welcoming you all back to the new and improved space in 2020!
